Another Word Processor ? Why not, if it is good enough. Atari's
'Introduction to Word Processing' (Calligrapher Lite) certainly falls
into this category - light on the pocket and easy to use. This particular
version under review is that produced by Atari themselves as part of
their introductory series to a variety of subjects, and comes complete
with a well written Manual and 2 disks. It will run on any ST/STE from
52OK upwards having a double-sided internal drive using the on screen
installation procedures which have been written for the novice - SO YOU
SIMPLY CAN'T GO WRONG. Don't worry about the GDOS installation either -
it works too.
During installation several options are available depending on the memory
at your fingertips - do you wish to run in high/med or both resolutions;
do you require non-English characters plus a rather essential feature for
installing an ASCII save feature ?
Boot the system up and a well designed Menu (mouse/ keyboard control) is
evident. A review is not meant to duplicate the Manual (alas 'tis often
the case) so on with the essentials. There are 7 windows available for
use plus a feature which allows a separate document to be placed within
the existing one. When one Calligrapher Doc is imported into another, the
complete set of headers, footers, graphics etc is brought along too. As
might be expected in a good program the invaluable cut copy and paste are
there as well Search functions exist for words & formatting codes. The
wildcard feature is very professional in the sense that all mis-spelling
recurrences can be located.
Text is a manic feature inherent in all DTP'ers. Can I make it big, can I
make it small, are columns, tabs, headers, footers etc. available, what
about Fonts , moving columns, multiple columns and all these problems
that eventually end up in a one page epic. No problems here. Styling of
documents is one of the really easy features of C-Lite and the whole
system is based on Atari GDOS fonts. (The printer output is top-quality -
more anon). Should you care to preview any document, simply click on
preview & use the scroll bar to page through the display. A single page
may be viewed or up to eight pages on one screen. Preview options allow
horizontal and vertical alignments to be adjusted.
In the Menu selection Style Attributes and Point size are available -
Point sizes range over 1O to 52 in size with a 'set' function which
opens a secondary font list. The Attributes are standard Bold, Italic,
superscript, subscript and strikeout (to remind you to get rid of
unwanted statements). Text appears in the manner born and a good clear
picture is apparent with respect to design. The tutorials in the Manual
explain all.
Concerning printing routines C-Lite uses GDOS vector fonts, two of which
are available on disk - Swiss and Dutch. Set up any size of point from 6
to 128 and all the edges, on printing out, will be sharp and well
defined. A Calligrapher Outline font routine takes care of all such
problems - so don't career off and buy fonts that are not defined
specifically for Calligrapher. The type of printer is set during the
installation of the program - thereafter go to the printer option screen
to choose your requirements - alignment, number of copies etc. While the
number of pages required may be specified, C-Lite will also select odd or
even numbered pages (very handy for manuscripts); pages may also be
printed starting from the last page rather than the first! Percentage
scaling allows vertical alteration of the page size.
Printer selection is limited to 9 pin and 24 pin Epson compatibles as
well as the option to install a driver from a supplementary extra disk.
The quality of the graphic output to my 9 pin Epson compatible printer is
excellent.
Column marking markers may be reset if you so wish - preview and
rearrange by dragging along the column marker. All is simple and well
documented and I can well see how addictive this WP can be for those new
to the field.
Graphics, graphics, graphics .....what use is a WP if they cannot be
imported. C-Lite supports .IMG and ,GEM files. Degas and Neo pics will
require a conversion program which should be purchased separately as a
separate PAK. In any event there is a plentiful supply of such utilities
within the PD world; screen dumps may be made via the snapshot prog. on
Disk 2 if required.
The graphics themselves are very easily imported - simply set he cursor
to the required location and select 'Insert Graphic' from the menu. No
doubt the size will most certainly be unsuitable - this is handled by
clicking within the graphic and then, using the expanding box routine,
set to any size required. Perhaps you have shrunk it too much - well use
the routine again and scale it up ! Should you have columns set up, then
the graphic will be scaled and centered automatically to the width of the
column; read the Manual carefully here to select the correct option for
this procedure.
Now for the Calligrapher Tool Box - 11 utilities here; the best of these
are: Asn.Edit.Prg - add fonts, remove fonts, change printer driver...
EditKey2 .Prg and an Edit Font.Prg; the latter two speak for themselves
and are very comprehensive.
There are two tutorials on disk 2 which cover WP with C-Lite very
efficiently. Altogether this is a 'mini' professional package containing
sufficient material for anyone new to word processing and, indeed, enough
for those who use them in an everyday manner. If your appetite is really
whetted then upgrades to the the major Calligrapher packages are
possible.
Many thanks to the ST Club for lending this package for review. There
are a number of Atari quick start tutorials available on differing
subjects - if the standard is the same, then they are well worth
acquiring.
